GeoEye-1 Satellite

GeoEye, Inc. is a premier provider of superior satellite and aerial imagery, location information products and image processing services. Our products and services enable timely, accurate and accessible location intelligence that translates into timely and vital insights for our customers, anywhere and at any time. We own and operate a constellation of Earth-imaging satellites, including the world’s highest resolution satellite, GeoEye-1, which provides our customers with the highest quality and most accurate satellite imagery available. We anticipate launching GeoEye-2, our next-generation satellite, in the 2012-2013 timeframe, to provide our customers with ongoing access to industry-leading imagery.

GeoEye has more than 530 employees and is headquartered in Dulles, Virginia, with facilities in Denver (Thornton), Colorado; St. Louis, Missouri; Norman, Oklahoma; and Mission, Kansas. GeoEye is a public company listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol GEOY.

The Company’s growing global sales network currently comprises 12 strategic business partners (government and commercial) and more than 100 resellers. Our business partners know their markets well and are close to customers who use location-based information for a vast array of applications.

We operate in three areas of the geospatial information services market: imagery collection, geospatial and imagery production and information services. Our capabilities serve market demand worldwide for imagery and information products to map, measure and monitor the Earth for a wide variety of applications including:

  • Defense and intelligence sectors
  • National mapping market
  • On-line mapping customers
  • Mining markets
  • Oil and gas markets
  • Architecture, engineering and construction companies
  • Monitoring
  • Forestry industry
  • Environmental assessment market

Imagery Collection

The Company collects tens of millions of square kilometers of Earth imagery annually with its satellite and aerial assets:

  • GeoEye-1 is the world’s highest resolution color and most accurate remote-sensing commercial satellite. It is capable of delivering both panchromatic (black-and-white) and multispectral (color) images with an incredible ground resolution of .41-meters (about 16 inches). GeoEye-1 can map the location of an object to within 3.5-meters (about 11 feet) of its true location on the Earth’s surface.
  • The IKONOS satellite produces color imagery with a resolution of .82-meters (about 32 inches) with positional and relative accuracy suitable for virtually all mapping requirements. Its mapping, intelligence analysis and feature extraction capabilities are among the best of any commercial imagery system in its class.
  • MJ Harden, our aerial subsidiary in Mission, Kansas, operates three aircraft—two equipped with advanced digital mapping cameras and one with a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) imaging system—for highly accurate terrain elevation mapping.

Production Services

GeoEye’s production services group converts raw imagery into precision geospatial information products. The Company’s products are backed by in-house expertise, extensive quality assurance practices and exceptional customer service.

GeoEye’s production facility in St. Louis, Missouri is an innovative center of excellence for advanced geospatial products. It is where we perform high-end, value-added services for our clients, delivering advanced image processing products and engineering analysis. The facility has the unique capability of producing satellite imagery products from multiple sources, including U.S. Government satellites.
Information Services

As demand grows for geospatial information, GeoEye’s information management services allow our customers to access secure, timely and accurate location information and seamlessly integrate that data into their current business environments. GeoEye’s information services eliminate the need for customer investment in specialized infrastructure and resources. Our subscription-based Web services platform streamlines the management and delivery of location intelligence, resulting in faster, smarter and more cost-effective decision-making.

GeoEye Foundation

In March 2007, the Company formed the GeoEye Foundation. The Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization founded on the belief that we have an obligation and social responsibility to share our technology and resources to help train others to map, measure and monitor the Earth. The Foundation makes awards to students, universities and non-governmental organizations that use satellite imagery in their research. Students have used our imagery for archeology, land cover assessment, climate change, forestry, geospatial intelligence and many other studies. Non-governmental organizations have used our imagery for humanitarian relief and disaster response.

History

GeoEye was formed in January 2006 when Virginia-based ORBIMAGE purchased the assets of Colorado-based Space Imaging. One of our predecessor companies first began performing geospatial services for the U.S. Government in July 1987. In March 2007, GeoEye acquired MJ Harden, enabling GeoEye to expand its offerings to include aerial imagery and specialized geospatial processing services.
